Is There a Job Placement Agency Just for Senior Citizens?
by Valerie Bolden-Barrett, Demand Media

Job placement agencies for seniors offer more employment services than most job banks.

Seniors who aren't ready to stop working and retire are getting help finding employment through job placement agencies. Online job banks for seniors offer mostly search tools. But a number of career-oriented job placement agencies cater to older workers. These agencies match seniors with employers looking to hire experienced workers. And as for-profit, nonprofit and government agencies, they offer a range of employment services.

JobsOver50 helps seniors form liaisons with their former schools and alma maters to give them an alumni advantage over others seeking jobs. The web-based company publishes career articles from the "Wall Street Journal" and has a link for finding certified career coaches. PrimeCB serves CareerBuilder's senior job seekers. Like its parent company, PrimeCB offers advice on career management, job-searching techniques and information on workplace issues. Your Encore hires retired engineers, scientists and product developers, and places them with companies on short-term projects. Bridgespan, formerly Bridgestar, is an executive-search and advisory firm that lists openings for seniors in nonprofit organizations.

Nonprofits
AARP, the national advocacy and membership organization for people 50 and over, has a Work & Retirement link on its website. AARP publishes lists of best employers for older workers and articles on job hunting. The organization also helped launch the National Older Worker Career Center in 1997 to place job seekers with employers looking for experienced workers. NOWCC's mission is to promote the value of seniors' skills and knowledge in the workplace. Commongood Careers helps entrepreneurs in the social services hire workers, including seniors. The agency gives job seekers and employers guidance throughout the recruiting process. The Phoenix Link helps experienced business and technology executives find "recareering" opportunities. The agency works with professional recruiting and staffing firms to place job candidates.

Generalists
Manpower Inc. and Kelly Services, two international employment agencies, started offering job placements for seniors to serve this growing population of job seekers. Manpower matches job candidates with employers for permanent and contingent positions. Kelly Services hires workers that are placed with employers for temporary assignments. AARP has partnered with both agencies to connect older workers with employers who are committed to hiring seniors.

Government
State and federal governments offer unemployed and low-income seniors job-placement and training opportunities. The federal Senior Community Service Employment Program helps get older workers into part-time, minimum wage service jobs in their communities. SCSE serves 68 percent of all unemployed people in government-sponsored programs. The U.S. Workforce Investment Act is administered through the states' labor departments. WIA provides job placement services, career counseling and information about the job market. WIA also identifies job openings, skills currently in demand and employment trends. The federal Trade Adjustment Assistance Program supports workers who have lost their jobs because of foreign trade. Participants learn new skills for reentry into the workforce. TAA also is administered by the states.
