Career opportunities for retiees in Koramangala Bangalore

KORAMANGALA: Senior Citizens in and around Koramangala have a new
career opportunity to dive into. Tata AIG Life Insurance Company
Limited, a joint venture between the Tata Group and American
International Group, Inc. (AIG), has started programmes for retirees
to become insurance salesperson.

Tata AIG sales team follows a network marketing sorts of business
model where more team members would mean bigger profits. Toward this
end, they have invited retired and senior citizens to start their own
insurance selling business. The insurer believes that senior citizens
are suited for the job as they are experienced and do not lack
integrity.

"Money and profits multiply as team members increase, which further
leads to one's own growth. Besides this people are tired of insurance
agents trying to coerce them into ill-advised insurance policies.
Senior citizen would play a significant role in building people's
trust in Tata AIG products," said AS Venkatesh Kumar, Business
Associate Manager, Tata AIG Life.

Hema Jayaram, Tata AIG Life Insurance Business Associate who built her
own team feels that there are not many opportunities for senior
citizens, so insurance selling would help them earn.

Old is gold

"Youngsters have more job opportunities unlike retirees. Senior
citizens have expe- rience so they would be the best people to advice
on insurance," expressed Ms Jayaram.

The business model is characterised by ease. Interested candidates
undergo a-week- long training and an exam to be a licensed insurance
agent. After this they can operate as an independent consultant or
build their own teams. The commission ranges from 6-32 percent
depending on the product sold. With no fixed timings and targets set
by the company, these insurance salesmen can work at their own pace.

Some of them sound positive about selling insur- ance. Rama
Shamsundaram, a retired offi- cial said she was skeptical when she
heard about it. When she later spoke to the compa- ny team she felt
positive about it.

Also working as an attracting feature is the TATA brand. Ms
Shamsundaram said, "Tata adds lot of value to it." Reiterating the
same is KG Bylappa, a retired officer of Karnataka State Road
Transport Corporation (KSRTC) who registered himself to be an
insurance agent. He said, "It is a good way to earn post-retire- ment,
being a new concept, I am taking this opportunity out of curiosity."
