-- There is life beyond 60 — a second life that begins after policemen hang up their boots and bid adieu to the khaki uniform.

A new initiative by the Delhi Police, the Delhi Police Retired Talent, provides a platform for its personnel to seek work after they have retired from the force. Under the project, resumes of retired personnel along with their photographs and contact details are uploaded under a sub-head on the force's official website for prospective employers to refer to.

The website already holds the resumes of 46 personnel, including those of three former ACPs and five Inspectors, all of whom have served in the force for over 30 years.

The project, conceived by former Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar, is believed to have received a good response. Several resumes that have been uploaded are being verified by the heads of units where the applicants last served before their retirement.

Dharmendra Kumar, Special Commissioner of Police (Crime), said, "There are several companies that look for former police officers with a clean record. While we do send them men who we know are honest, it is possible that we may leave some out. This is why our former commissioner started this project. Now, the companies can go to our official website and contact the former officers."

Kumar said several companies, especially security agencies, preferred to hire retired policemen because of their experience of working with the Delhi Police.

Another avenue where retired police officers could find jobs with were food chains. Kumar said these chains needed administrators who could help supervise daily operations, while teaching businessmen how to keep an eye on suspicious movement in packed restaurants. Kumar said two former ACPs had found jobs as administrators with McDonalds and a software company.

Kumar said there were several private companies looking for men well-versed in the country's laws, who could help coordinate with local police. Former policemen were favoured for those posts, he said.

However, the process is not as simple as it sounds. Kumar said the senior officers go through a rigorous vetting to ensure that former officers who send in their resumes have a clean record.

Once a resume was submitted, Kumar said, the former officer's service record was vetted by the heads of units where the officer served just before retirement. "We want to ensure that only officers with clean records post their resume on the website. We do not want to refer rogue elements, nor do we want want cheats claiming to be former policemen. As senior officers, we try and help some of our retired junior subordinates find work, but some may not be known to the senior officials. This initiative will definitely help them find a new path in life," Kumar said.
