30 senior citizens get placed in a job fair for 60-plus

In his 43-year-long career, Amitabh Mishra, 68, had designed several
mechanical engineering equipment. Now, he wants to give back to the
profession by guiding engineering students. Armed with his long and
fruitful experience, he registered with a city-based NGO, '60 plus
life', that seeks to place retired senior citizens into work life.
Today, Mishra is a visiting faculty, teaching "machine design" to
final year MTech and BTech students at the Indus University.
Mishra is one of the 900 senior citizens registered with the
five-month-old city-based NGO that held its first-ever job fair in
Ahmedabad on Saturday. Around 60 companies, including 35 SMEs, 12 NGOs
and six banks, participated at the fair that saw 30 retired senior
citizens getting placed among the 107 job seekers.
"I find the idea of this fair helpful to the SME industry where it is
not always possible for firms like ours to hire highly experienced
people and pay high salaries. Also, there is a tremendous growth
opportunity for senior professionals who have long years of expertise
in a particular domain. The guidance of such highly trained senior
professionals can be taken where my experience falls short. I found
that there are 3 per cent people from the dairy industry who have
sought jobs at the fair," said Himanshu Shah, director of Clarion
Casein, a manufacturer of milk proteins.
Some of the sectors that saw senior citizens seeking employment at the
fair were management, administration, academics, HR, training,
mentoring, legal, PR, sales, marketing, accounts, finance, audit,
production and procurement.
